Teach Computer Classes in Rio de Janeiro
About the Volunteer in Rio Program:
Many residents of the Complexo do Alemão do not yet know how to turn on a computer, open a program, or conduct online research. Community in Action is helping narrow the digital divide by offering computer training in several schools, community centers, and churches throughout the region. In 2012, the CiA team will be working with five organizations, reaching more than 1,000 students through computer literacy programs. As a volunteer, depending on your skill-set and placement opportunities, you will be teaching classes as the primary teacher, supporting computer maintenance, or serving as a teacher’s aid. This will be up to you!
- Language Requirements: To teach classes, basic Portuguese is required; to provide maintenance support there is no language requirement
- Two options are available: Lead this project or make an online donation

The Need
Computer literacy is needed to obtain a job or pursue higher educational avenues. Many residents in the Complexo do Alemão lack basic computer skills, which excludes them from these types of opportunities. Community in Action’s computer classes are being offered in entities throughout the region, primarily reaching underserved youth without access to the Internet or computer training courses. Our computer classes focus on basic aptitudes such as word-processing, excel best practices, and Internet navigation techniques. Through our diverse programs, our ultimate goal is to help local residents gain the necessary Information Technology skills that are needed today, in all walks of life.
